comtemplating hip resurfacing

I have held off on a total hip replacement for years, waiting until I was as old as possible (56 currently), but I must have surgery soon. I am excited about resurfacing and my consultations with surgeons has met with mixed enthusiasm. I recently met a very experienced surgeon in total hip surgeries, but because of the licensing in this country, only started with resurfacing in the spring of 2007. Although I had a very good comfort level with this surgeon, he has done only 50-60 resurfacings so far. On this website, I see recommendations that no fewer than 100 resurfacings be used as a minimum experience level. Since there are few surgeons in the US with a large experience base, what are others experience and/or recommendations with this situation? Thanks, htj

Hi, don't be fearful of the amount of hip resurfacings your surgeon has done. My only did slightly more than 50, but I still went with him. Your comfort level is probably the biggest indicator as well as your confidence level. You are right about there are not enough surgeons to choose from due to the FDA approval only being since May 2006. Also, there are many surgeons still not on the bandwagon with resurfacing. Where did you surgeon train? Mine was trained in Birmingham, England, with Mr. Treacy. It may help you with your decision if you find out where your surgeon trained. Good luck and keep us posted on your recovery. I am now just a few days shy of 3 weeks postop and feel wonderful. The pain is gone and I am most pleased with the outcome.
