Not had this experience, but I saw my consultant for my 1 year follow up this week and he said that some people are experiencing a build up of fluid around the hip after a few years. He is now scanning people even if symtomless at 5 years to check for this. It should show on your scan if this is the case. Good luck.

    Hi Tom,

I rowed for Wisconsin in College (graduated 1988). I am 42 and scheduled to have my left hip resurfaced by Dr. Su in NYC. I have struggled for years with the hip and a bad back... would be interested to hear if you get back on the water... hard to believe the artificial hip can take the torque and pression from "full catch"... my fingers are crossed for you. My e-mail is wfilip@rwbaird.com

I was recommended to Dr. Robert Gilbert by a friend who had a LTHR and RTHR 5 years ago. I had a LBHR ten days ago and the recovery is coming along very well. Dr. Gilbert is excellent, along with the staff at the Cal Pac Medical Ctr. Dr. Gilbert was always available to answer any questions. I highly recommend him.

Hi Iam37 years old and was told 1 year agoI had an artheritic hip which was causing lots of pain when I done anything active. Was told by the surgeon I could have a resurfaceing op but have not done so as I think I can carry on with the numb ache I get and think I am too young. But now I think I should of had the surgery.I have actuallyhad the pain 3years but the 1st 2 years the doc's thought it was sciatica.I like allsports especially football but these are getting near impossible and then I have trouble sleeping at night and keep tossing and turning and ache for several days after. Is there anyone else who had these symptons and did surgery cure them? Also has anyone played footballagain after surgery?

Thanks

Dave, thought you might be interested to know that I am having my hip resurfaced by Dr. Phillip Schmitt on June 16th. Not only was he highly recommended, he was the first orthopedic surgeon to give me a correct diagnosis of hip dysplasia. This explained why I have always had one leg shorter than the other, a funny little walk, etc. If any other Michiganders would be interested in my experience, please feel free to e-mail me. I am actually driving from Bay City, MI to Commerce to have my surgery done. Good luck on your search!

Hi Karen, apologies for not replying before, I only just spotted your query. I'm no expert but I believe there is very little difference between the Adept and the Birmingham devices, they certainly look virtually identical. My surgeon said the sizing was better for my hip anatomy which is a little "unusual"and 6 months in (today infact!) I am absolutely delighted with it. You may have had your surgery by now and if so I hope it went well and you are starting your recovery, if it is still to come go forward confidently and look forward to being pain free! All the best, Maggie

Hello Geoff...I found your website today, and several times while I was reading this, I was just shaking my head thinking, this is exactly what's happenning to me. I had double hip replacement surgery by Dr. Greidanus on Feb 27, 2008 and am now 7 week post op, and I feel EXACTLY the same way you do about everything. I have also just started going to the pool, and have a physio who comes to my house every two weeks and guides me in my progress. I also get stiff if I push too hard, although, it's hard to know if I'm pushing too hard, or if this is just the way you have to push to get better. I'm at the cane stage too, and often just walk without anything. I walked stairs up and done using nothing for the first time today, and managed quite well, but after my exercise, a visit to the pool, I am bagged and find I get stiff in the evening after lying on the couch to relax. I am very happy to have found someone else who has gone through almost exactly what I'm now experiencing....I would like to know how you're doing now and how it was getting from the 8 week period to now. Are you out mountain biking yet? Please, please write me back, as I would find your feedback so encouraging. I have my follow up apt with Dr. Greidanus on May 6th, and am looking forward to seeing what he has to say.

Just to tell you a bit more about me...I am 56 yrs. old and very much looking forward to getting back to snow skiing, water skiing, squash, tennis, hiking and just plain old daily living without pain and being hunched over. Everyone already says I look so much better simply because I can now stand up straight. I'm not sure how long I have to wait to get back to my job, as I have a very physical job working on cars as an auto painter, so it may take a bit longer for me, but I am also looking very much forward to that as I am also getting bored at home. Good thing the hockey playoffs are on right now....

anyway...I look forward to talking further to you and hope you are still doing well...

Ted

Thanks so much for all that great info since I am going in for resurfacing in May, you add a great level of releif in your words. I just have a quick question for you though, what is the difference between the Adept device and the Birmingham Hip Replacement? Please advise, thanks so much!
