Professor Piers Yates Published Papers:
I have been practicing in WA as a Specialist
Orthopaedic and Trauma Surgeon from 2006 with a particular
interest in joint replacement, and trauma. My training began
in the UK, in several important orthopaedic centres
including Bristol, London, Bournemouth and Southampton. I
then completed 3 fellowships in allograft and revision joint
surgery under Professor Wood and Nivbrant in Perth; the
Advanced hip fellowship in Bristol UK, under Professor
Gordon Bannister, Mr Evert Smith, Mr Tony Ward; and finally
completed an AO trauma fellowship in the Rocky Mountain
Regional Trauma Centre in Denver Colorado, USA with Dr Wade
Smith, and Dr Steve Morgan.
In 2007, I became Head of Orthopaedics and Trauma at
Fremantle, Kaleeya and Rockingham Hospitals. In 2006 I set
up the highly successful elective joint replacement unit in
Osborne Park.
I am also Professor of
Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of Western Australia
and Clinical Director of the Perth Bone and Tissue Bank. I
have published over 35 scientific papers relating to
orthopaedics, as well as book chapters, and I present
frequently at regional, national and international meetings.
I am part of 2 teams designing new hip and knee
replacements, and consult for several orthopaedic companies
as well as the Department of Health of WA.
I led the development of the DoH
Musculoskeletal Elective Joint Replacement Model of Care,
which provides a template for how orthopaedic services could
be delivered across WA in the future. I also am involved
with developing the mechanism for assessing the use of joint
replacement implants in WA, and developing a state wide plan
in Trauma and Elective orthopaedic services in the next 10
years.
Teaching is very important to me, and as
well as educating the undergraduate medical students, I
teach the orthopaedic training registrars, and other groups.
I am a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons
as well as a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of
England. I am a member of the British Orthopaedic
association, the British Hip Society, and the Australian
Orthopaedic Association.
I am happily married to Vihara, and have 3 young
children.
My particular interests are:
Surgery of the hip; including total hip
replacement, revision hip replacement, resurfacing of the
hip, femoro-acetabular impingement, preservation of the hip,
deformity correction in the adult, the young hip, hip
dysplasia, minimally invasive hip replacement, alternative
bearings.
Surgery
of the knee; including total knee replacement,
unicompartmental knee replacement, knee preservation surgery
and osteotomy, arthroscopy, navigation.
Trauma surgery;
including upper and lower limb fracture management, pelvic
and acetabular surgery, malunion and non-union surgery.
I consult and operate privately at St John of God Murdoch
Hospital, and consult and operate at Fremantle, Osborne
Park, and Kaleeya hospitals.
