Dearest Pat, my deepest
gratitude to you and many others involved in surface
hippy and others that are not i.e. surgical table reps. various surgeons
thru out the world - Drs. Roberson, Dr. Bose, De Smet, Dr. Hansen, Matta,
Brown, the South Carolina Dr. Gross for being a pioneer in resurfacing, Dr. Bala, and others
I'm not remembering this moment, and
my deepest gratitude has to go to Dr. Raphael Klug.
I had bilateral hip
resurfacing done Feb. 24-2007. I managed to get off all narcotics by about
day 11 or 12 post-op. I am quite skinny and the narcs worked well for hip
pain but absolutely were taking there toll on the rest of my body mostly
stomach and head. I googled oxycontin and darvocet and online they were
instantly compared to heroin and methadone, BELIEVE IT THESE ARE SOME HEAVY
DRUGS, and the withdrawal can be severe.
I am still having difficulty
sleeping but am slowly figuring out positions (still not many to choose
from). I am getting around on crutches and bearing a little more weight each
day. I take no pain meds of any kind, thank you God, I change positions
fairly frequently i.e. sitting, walking, laying. still can't quite stand on
my head, but I will get there.
I was told by a very reliable P.T. that
everyone comes around in time. Probably not good to compare as everyone one
is different. My athletic goals are to once again surf, snowboard, ski, mtn.
and road bike, swim, play a little volleyball, basketball, etc. I have
completed six Hawaii Ironman's 1991-1997, but have not run for a couple years
because of the intense hip pain and it is very doubtful that I will take up
running, in my opinion the risks outweigh the benefits. A little easy
basketball or the like will be the extent of my running, there are to many
other great sports to risk them for some more years of running. Climbing a
few mountains would be very cool.
I work as a registered nurse for 9 years
now and believe I have a lot of life experiences at age 50, my life in my
twenties involved things I wont discuss here. I found out about Dr. Klug
after a solid 3 months of research via computer, phone, and just thinking
outside the box. The way I found out about Dr. Klug was extremely unexpected
(U.S. surgeon). I was tentatively planning on a trip to India and paying out
of pocket, but thank god once again that wasn't necessary for me, although I
feel that could be a great decision for some.
Pat please share this online
for others to read. Thank God and everyone. Floyd Landis and other
professional athletes are having resurfacing or total hip replacement done
and I hear good outcomes. I think a lot of it depends on a solid lengthily
rehab. What's a year or so to totally recover after all these years of pain,
mega does of anti-inflammatory, etc.. A year or so is not much in the big
picture. Just think about all the cancer patients and other illnesses that
don't have the chance the arthritic hip patients do have. Have patience and
make decisions that are right for you with help from the professionals.
Great luck to all, keep your spiritual program strong and you will do great.
