Hi Everyone, I waited for a few days before sharing my experience. I had
a RBHR by Dr. Peter Brooks on Dec 5th at Euclid Hospital-Cleveland
Clinic. I was very anxious before surgery thinking of course of all
the potential complications.
I came home to Tallmadge, Ohio (about 40 miles from
Hospital) on Sat afternoon. I was able to complete the tests they want
you to do for discharge. These were mostly demonstrating crutch
mobility. Sat night was very painful and I attribute that to much
activity just getting home and being under medicated.
The first few days were non descript, a lot of snoozing,
some exercises, noticed a lot of bruising, swelling and new pains
from the healing process. My spouse has been able to assist me with
just about anything I have needed. The Lovenox shots are not too bad to
administer. My last one will be on Tuesday then aspirin for
a month. On Tuesday, 6th day post op, I felt like I had a break
through day. My appetite returned, and I felt a little stronger. Now
each day brings incremental strength and stamina. I want to do
more stairs in order to build up my stamina. In Ohio now we are
experiencing winter blizzards so walking outside are out of
the question right now. I will return to Kent State University
Recreation and Wellness Center after the first of the year to begin rehab
in the pool.
I will keep you posted on my progress and any individual
inquiries welcome at listed email address. I go in this Tuesday to
have my 28 staples removed and have a 2nd follow-up ultrasound done on
legs for clot presence.
UPDATE
The 6 week check up was in Mid January. Dr. Brooks suggested
only one exercise other than the normal exercise I
do…Walking, elliptical, and swimming. These exercises were
lying on the non operated side and raising the operated leg,
3 sets a day 30 reps each set. These are tough exercises if
done slow. I was sore at first from doing these but was
probably doing too much with other exercises.
I didn’t use crutches or a cane after that date only just a
few times on snowy and icy conditions.
I have experienced bouts of insomnia and back pain that has
slowly subsided over the now 10 weeks since surgery.
It was suggested to me that I do some stretching in bed in
the morning before I even get out of bed. This has helped
the lower back feel better and made getting out of bed
easier first thing in the morning.
I am now approaching the 11th week and walked 2.21 miles
this am. The sleeping is more normal now, but I feel the
back pain if I do too much. I hope to get to 5-6 miles by
April.
Dr. Brooks will see you after one year where all
restrictions will be lifted. Up until one year, no running,
jumping, or lifting over 50 lbs. are the restrictions. Use
good judgment in normal exercise and don’t overdue it. Your
body will tell you without hesitation when you have done too
much.
Initially, Dr. Peter Brooks was recommended to me by my
daughter who is a nurse at the Cleveland Clinic, I then
sought out patients of Dr Brooks through this website and
made personal contact with a few. I am very satisfied with
the outcome and experience. Prior to contacting Dr. Brooks I
did meet with a friend, who had a hip resurfacing with Dr
Goldberg at University Hospitals in Cleveland. This was part
of the FDA trial for the Wright Co. implant. His was done
almost 4 years ago and he is doing fine and playing
basketball several times a week.
