Hip Resurfacing News

Neil Rowsell

Dr. Kohan  2007

My story is that my right hip was deteriorating over about 8 years. Because I am a sports person (playing squash for 42 years and wanting to continue), I regularly sought assistance from chiropractors, hysiotherapists and other such people with very limited affect.

It was only this year (2007 when I was 59) that my latest chiropractor suggested that I seek out the latest technology advances because, with his limited knowledge, he was just trying to delay an inevitable future hip replacement. This led me to get a referral to Dr Kohan, whom I first saw in June this year. After examining my x-rays, Dr Kohan told me that my right hip was not only arthritic but also had a condition called dysplasia. I had never heard of this before. He said there was a range of treatments, but, if I really wanted to get back to vigorous sporting activities like squash, I would need a hip resurfacing operation. He directed me to web sites and gave me a lot of information about it. After thinking about it and discussing it with family, I realized it was a "quality of life" decision, and I was able to get it done by Dr Kohan on 10 August this year.

The whole experience has been "tremendous" and "life changing". Not only did Dr. Kohan do his part very well (x-rays and the way I feel are proof of that), but the whole service including Dr Kerr (the anaesthetist) with his pain management plan and St Lukes hospital at Elizabeth Bay in Sydney was great.

Less than 3 months after the operation, I can do things that I haven’t been able to do for years; like straddling a chair for instance. I have recently booked an overseas trip for January to celebrate, and my family gave me a Sydney Harbour Bridge climb for my 60th birthday last month; something they wouldn’t have done before. I’ll probably use that in January before I go overseas. When I get back from overseas in February next year, I’ll be able to play squash again.

Regards

Neil
