Hip Resurfacing News

LCHR  October 13, 2008 Dr. Mont

I had left Cormet hip resurfacing with Dr. Mont on Oct. 13, .just over a month ago, and I seem to be healing nicely. I was extraordinarily pleased with his skill. I think he is brilliant.

I am now 6.5 weeks post-op.  I returned to my sedentary job 5.5 weeks post op.  I still use one crutch at work, but around the house I'm full weight bearing.

I am fortunate to have two exercise devices at home that have greatly accelerated my recovery: a recumbent stationary bike (made by True, which allows the seat back to recline way back so that I can pedal non-weight bearing (from a sitting position)--in both directions, forwards and backwards--without violating the 90 degree hip restriction--though my hip restrictions were lifted after 5 weeks) and  --  most importantly --  an Arc Trainer (made by Cybex Corp).  The Arc Trainer can be full weight bearing if one wishes, but it has handles so one can stand on it and only be 50% weight bearing if one wishes by using the handles so that the upper body is taking some, but not all, weight off the hips; the Arc Trainer is far less demanding compared to an ellyptical because the Arc Trainer only moves the legs in a limited "arc" whereas a standard ellypitcal requires much more leg extension and I think would be too demanding on my hip (and the sutures on the internal muscles) at this point in recovery.  The Arc Trainer also keeps one from "cheating" (by placing too little weight on the surgical hip) since balanced weight bearing must be sustained.

I've made very rapid progress using both of these machines....but especially the Arc Trainer.
