As a television medical
correspondent for decades on shows like Today,
Dateline and the CBS evening News and author of 12
books on consumer medicine, I have to admit it. I
have never faced a more vexing decision than
choosing between a total hip replacement and hip
resurfacing. The claims and data appeared wildly
contradictory and each surgeon’s take was miles
apart from the others...
...I called great friends in
orthopedics at the leading Harvard hospitals and in
NY, Baltimore and Los Angeles. The word I got was
emphatic. Don’t do the hip resurfacing, it’s a
failed concept. It failed in the 70s and its doomed
to fail again...
...I began reading the entire world
literature. I called doctors in France, England,
Belgium, Germany. The more I read, the less I seemed
to know...
The Surface Hippy Website was conceived
and designed by Patricia Walter. Patricia had her hip
resurfaced with a BHR,
Birmingham Hip Resurfacing, in March 2006 with
Dr. De Smet
of Belgium. She felt there was a need for a website to help people learn about hip resurfacing. She knew
first hand that it was a wonderful solution for a hip
replacement and wanted to help others learn about hip
resurfacing. Visit
Pat's Corner to read her informative articles about hip
resurfacing including
How to Choose A Doctor and
Questions to Ask Your Doctor.
Surface Hippy is not financially
controlled by any medical companies, doctors or hospitals. Patricia donates her time to maintain the website
and adds information almost daily. Hundreds of prospective
hip resurfacing patients have written to her asking for
information. The website is a collection of information to
help people learn about hip resurfacing. Surface Hippy is
a patient to patient guide. Almost 7000 unique visitors
use the website each month.
Some doctors have been kind enough to
provide articles about different subjects pertaining to hip
resurfacing,
video interviews and
personal interviews. It is always interesting to learn from a
doctors point of view. The website does not provide medical
advice, only your surgeon can tell you what is right for
your own situation.
Many hip resurfacing patients have
provided their
Hip Stories so hip resurfacing candidates
can learn from their experiences. They explain about their
decision to have a hip resurfacing, their surgeries, the hip resurfacing
device they received, their
doctor, their hospital experiences and their recoveries.
If you are a first time visitor to
Surface Hippy you might wonder where to start to learn about
