Subject: [surfacehippy] Surgery with Dr. Gross
Well, after watching this board on and off over the last
four painful years, I finally had my right hip resurfed by
Dr. Gross on Sept. 5, 2007. I want to tell everyone that my
pre-op and OR experience were beyond belief. I used to be
an RN and I have never seen a team of medical providers so
compassionate and just plain nice.
We stayed at the Courtyard by Marriott in the parking lot
of the
hospital. Being the first
case of the day we thought it would be easier. Two or
three minutes
after arriving they
came to take me back. My pre-op nurse handed me a cup of
water and
several pills.
Surprising since I was told to have no liquids past
midnight. Apparently
Dr. Gross has his
patients take a cocktail of meds to head off pain and
nausea post-op. It
was Celebrex,
Lyrica (for nerve pain), Zantac, and a Scopalamine patch
behind my ear to
prevent nausea.
My nurse numbed my hand first before she would insert the
IV.
Then things got busy. I marked the hip for surgery with a
Sharpie. I met
my lead OR
nurse and saw Lee Webb. The FANTASTIC doc from anesthesia
arrived and
also a lady
from a blood company. She was there to remove 51cc of
blood. This blood
gets
separated into plasma rich and plasma poor blood (I think,
I was unaware
of this
procedure. She explained that the rich blood gets mixed
into the cap to
promote bone
growth. I think and the poor blood gets sprayed in the
incision during
closure to promote
healing. My hip was uncemented, not sure if they do that
on everyone.
My nurse was then back with "good drugs for my IV" and I
started to doze
for a moment. I
was awake on and off during surgery and have never been so
comfortable in
my life. Lots
of talking going on but I was very relaxed. I was awake
right away in
Recovery. No pain at
all. They took an x-ray and I was actually bored waiting
to go to my
room.
Therapy had me walking the halls within a couple of
hours. My nurse Lynn
was resurfed
by Dr. Gross several years ago. The food was not so great
but I need to
lose weight
anyway.
I should have put this in a blog somewhere, hope it's not
too boring. My
only regret thus
far is going home the first post-op day, that's a little
rough. I just
wanted let other people
know how wonderful the actual surgical experience can be.
BTW-Lee Webb
did a beautiful
job on my incision. No bruising, no staples, four
inches. I know many
people here have
the jitters before surgery but I felt that I couldn't have
had a better
team. So far things are
good, hope the clunking goes away, it's only been 5 days.
