Surgeon Report: Dr. Craig Morrison, Southern Joint Replacement Institute

by Scott Herman

Feb 15, 2007

I am six weeks post-op with Dr. Morrison. I have been asked to post a report on my experience with him since I am the first newsgroup member to have surgery with him. Dr. Morrison is a specialist in joint replacement, as expected given his affiliation. I was about his ninth BHR.

Overall, I can say that I am unequivocally pleased with the results and the process. I am TOTALLY pain free at six weeks post-op and am able to perform all my activities of daily living. I had no complications with the recovery process.

I would like to report the following information about my experience with Dr. Morrison specifically:

1. He carefully and thoughtfully answered all my questions about his experience and the benefits/risks of the surgery. I never felt rushed during appointments. He had prepared thoroughly for the appointment by studying my x-rays and referral information. He saw my notebook with questions and after completing the examination he sat down to allow me to ask my questions. At no time did I feel pressured one way or the other.

2. Much of the non-surgical care is provided by two nurse practitioners, both of whom I was very satisfied with. They returned my calls promptly both pre-surgery and post-surgery. It is obvious that they are proud to be working for Dr. Morrison. Their relaxed demeanor and obvious confidence in Dr. Morrison did a great deal to relieve my pre-op jitters.

3. Dr. Morrison does his surgeries at St. Thomas hospital in Nashville, Tennessee. Reviews of their quality are available online. I was very impressed with both the pre-surgery assessment/instructions and my experience post-surgery. I can honestly say I have no complaints about the care I received.

4. Dr. Morrison insists on using general anesthesia instead of an epidural. I initially had a preference for an epidural but decided to defer to his judgment.

5. Dr. Morrison refers for three-times-a-week physical therapy for six weeks post surgery. I used Star Physical Therapy in Lebanon, Tennessee; with which I was extremely pleased.

6. I received same-day feedback from Dr. Morrison's nurse practitioner on the results of my Coumadin levels and Doppler (an ultrasound test for blood clots).

7. Dr. Morrison requires attendance at a pre-surgery "class." It was professionally done and actually very helpful, even for someone who has read quite a bit on the subject.

8. Billing and precertification with BCBS/TN was entirely hassle-free from my end. I had the initial appointment then received an authorization letter a week later.

9. His office staff returns calls and is very helpful.

In retrospect, I can say that I recommend Dr. Morrison and SJRI without reservation. I am especially pleased with the matter-of-fact way in which he answered my questions. For example, at the six-week follow-up, I had questions about resuming various activities (weight training, cycling, skating) and he took the time to explain the time that should elapse before each one. Obviously, this will vary greatly from person to person, but he informs me I will have no activity restrictions even one year. He expects me to be able to return to martial arts.

Please don't hesitate to contact me directly if you have questions that I haven't covered. Thank you to everyone who provided information to me as I was considering and preparing for my surgery.
