| 1. | I may be having a complicaton now but I am not sure. | Wed, 12/19/07 1:02 PM |
| 2. | I'm just 2 weeks post-op. I used to have back pain, but can't tell if it's really gone yet, but I feel it has. I have no joint pain, but rather muscle discomfort. On another note, before the US thinks we should all have socialized medicine they should spend a few days at Jan Palfin Hospital, where you have to self-medicate, where there are designated smoking rooms and you have to fend for yourself. | Wed, 12/19/07 9:46 AM |
| 3. | I wish I had done it a year or two earlier | Wed, 12/19/07 12:50 AM |
| 4. | 2 years after I could not walk at all. Major stress factor due to the positioning of the cup and AVN. Had THR 3 weeks ago as a result | Tue, 12/18/07 12:15 PM |
| 5. | After surgery i took no pain medication from the time i left the hospital...i had no pain with the exception of the incision being somewhat uncomfortable....i used tylenol | Tue, 12/18/07 2:46 AM |
| 6. | It changed my life for the better. Don't know why I waited so long. | Mon, 12/17/07 10:30 PM |
| 7. | Only about 11 days post op, so couldn't answer and in some cases made educated guesses for some questions. | Mon, 12/17/07 7:47 PM |
| 8. | I had problems with the hip for 3-4 years prior to resurfacing. Hurt the hip area exercising a year and a half prior, and I think I still have some non-joint damage. I did a twisting, old man version of the splits which I feel cause problems with connective tissues. I haven't, however, been able to get it diagnosed as such. | Mon, 12/17/07 7:43 PM |
| 9. | Only 12 days post op, but felt I needed to fill out the survey. | Mon, 12/17/07 7:34 PM |
| 10. | Grade IV shoulder sepratn. 2 years ago -- bike accident. Post op was MUCH more painful - this is cake. | Mon, 12/17/07 7:15 PM |
| 11. | I'm just under 5 weeks out and so far, so good. Rehab was tougher than I thought, mentally and physically, but I'm also impressed that I'm walking with a cane and very little limp. I expect to be walking with no assistive device and no limp soon. | Mon, 12/17/07 4:04 PM |
| 12. | dr john keggi waterbury hosp. new anterior approach he is the best in the country! | Mon, 12/17/07 12:47 PM |
| 13. | I would have liked an "Instruction Booklet" that outlined what to expect after surgery, but in general, I got very good care, was proactive about finding things out myself, and had a wonderful PT, so got along quite well. Am curious about the long-term results, but I guess I'll just have to keep up with my research! | Sun, 12/16/07 5:52 PM |
| 14. | If this survey is still up, I'll take it again next week for the post-op part. | Sat, 12/15/07 7:19 AM |
| 15. | significant swelling near operative site has resulted in reduced mobility and weakness (18 days postop) | Fri, 12/14/07 11:06 AM |
| 16. | Dr. Michael Jacobs and the Joint Experience group at Good Samaritan Hospital in Baltimore--it doesn't get any better! | Wed, 12/12/07 12:10 PM |
| 17. | I have had issues with the IT band on the surgery side. sometimes it gets very 'washboardy'. PT helped. | Mon, 12/10/07 10:54 PM |
| 18. | I wouldn't use the same surgeon because he should have used the special dysplasia cup but didn't. Althought I don't have pain, at this point anyway, there is a slight sensation of clunking or movement that is disconcerting. Only time will tell whether this was a big mistake or not. For now, I am extremely happy to be walking without pain! | Mon, 12/10/07 5:00 PM |
| 19. | Dislocated 1-2 days after surgery and had to be put back in and additional surgery to tighten everything up, which is why I spent 2 weeks in hospital | Sun, 12/9/07 3:55 PM |
| 20. | Dr. Paul Kim (Ottawa surgeon) and Wright Medical prothesis changed my life. Thank you, thank you very mucy (Elvis like) | Fri, 12/7/07 11:54 PM |
| 21. | Due to my bone structure, the surgeon did not feel that resurfacing would hold up longer than two years. (The cup was not fitting well.)Therefore he performed a total hip replacement. This was a great disappointment to me. | Wed, 12/5/07 9:05 AM |
| 22. | I notice knee pain now in the operated leg, but it comes and goes. Morning pain was the worst but seems to have gone. Still after 4 weeks feeling "light headed" when I lay down or get up. | Wed, 12/5/07 8:01 AM |
| 23. | The longer your muscles were not used in leg with bad hip and are 50 or older the longer it takes to restore total leg strengh. | Tue, 12/4/07 7:22 PM |
| 24. | Most of the questions towards the end are not relevant since I am less than 1 week post op. I wonder if you would prefer the survey be taken again later or just only taken once (either now or later). | Sun, 12/2/07 9:44 AM |
| 25. | At 9 months now am having pain after walking that I believe is due to pulled groin muscle/tendon. It has bothered me for two months, so am doing less exercise than two months ago. | Sat, 12/1/07 9:59 PM |
| 26. | Had my right hip resurfaced by Mr. McMinn in Birmingham, UK. I waited almost 20 years to have the opperation but knowing what I know now, I should have had it years ago! | Fri, 11/30/07 11:22 AM |
| 27. | absolutely life changing. although i am very happy with the surgery itself, i was not prepared for the emotional changes that accompany this life change. i am a completely different person now. | Fri, 11/30/07 10:49 AM |
| 28. | I still have a mild limp, which I believe will eventually resolve completely. I also have some stiffness on getting up from a chair. Based on my experience with the other hip (which was done in 8/06) I expect this also to be completely alleviated in time. | Wed, 11/28/07 7:22 PM |
| 29. | I had a hypersensitivity to the metal in the BHR. I had a debridement done in nov 2005 and then the BHR was removed and replaced with a ceramic on ceramic THR 10 months after the original surgery. I got a stress fracture in the femur 9 mths after the THR. My hip is still causing pain 2 years after THR. I cannot walk for an hour without pain. | Wed, 11/28/07 6:57 PM |
| 30. | I'm not an Amirican and don't live in America. I'm from Curacao, Netherlands Antilles. That's an Island in the caribbean in front fo the coast of Vanzuela. Pre-operating condition very athlectic. Was running marathons. In 1999 while training for a marathon I find out I had osteoarthrites.A lot of pain, but I'm not a medicine swallower. I started taking glucosamine and chondriotine sulfate. That helped enormously. I even resume running. In febr. 2005 I had the idea that something had to be done. The form of the femur changed. In stead of round it was more egg-like. And the hip was in a fixed position. In the sense that I could not turn it internally and could not bring the leg to the midline. I started researching the internet because back then in 1999 I saw a report on dateline about the dancer William Starret who had a bilateral hip surgery using a new method and who made his come-back on stage 7 months later. Became aware that the new method was resurfacing. researched it and got operated nov. 15, 2005 in Belgium by dr. de Smet. | Wed, 11/28/07 3:01 PM |
| 31. | My operation was very successful in relieving the OA pain. Moderate exercise has not caused any problems. The only notable difficulty has been the long term rehab necessary to regain flexibility lost prior to surgery. This has entailed some moderate soft tissue discomfort. | Tue, 11/27/07 1:58 PM |

| 34. | I am very active. I could go back to playing tennis. I played tennis all my life...but I have lost the urge to compete. I ride a bike every day. Do spin classes. I have fallen 5 or 6 times on my bike and have not done any damage to my left hip. I may start playing a little again. My range of motion improved greatly after surgery. I have all the numbers to prove it! | Mon, 11/26/07 3:32 PM |
| 35. | pelvis cracked during procedure was a setback but would do it again in a heartbeat. | Sun, 11/25/07 5:03 PM |

| 43. | Only disappointment has been my inbability to regain a full range of motion in my opeated hip. I cannot bring my knee to my chest while laying on my back. Where as my other leg has no problems. PT has not helped in that at all. | Fri, 11/23/07 11:39 PM |
| 44. | Still in physical therapy...having a bad week, need to see the doctor next week. Having more pain now (4 weeks) than I did the first week. | Fri, 11/23/07 10:47 PM |

| 51. | Dr Rogerson and his team are FANTASTIC!!!!! The "HIP HAB" program at Meriter was a major factor in my total rehab!!! | Thu, 11/22/07 11:00 AM |
| 52. | No problems except for possibly, soft tissue discomfort around the greater trochanter. Not exactly sure what it is. Resulted when I was doing PT exercise. Working on stability exercises with a rubber band on the non-op leg and trying to keep stabile with the op leg. This created some pain and discomfort when I did the exercise. Stopped doing it when it caused pain, but I could feel something had happened. Still have good range of motion, strength and stability at this point, but do have the pain. In particular, when walking up stairs. | Thu, 11/22/07 10:46 AM |

| 56. | I was taking 200 mg of celebrex daily prior to my surgery, and didn't have the desire to walk along many beaches I had traveled so far to visit. Without the celebrex, I wouldn't have even tried to go to these destinations. I hadn't found any other pain (or de-inflamatory) medications that worked as well as celebrex. I haven't taken even one capsule of celebrex since my surgery - 2 years and 2 months ago. I dream to play ultimate frisbee again when I live in an area with a team. | Wed, 11/21/07 10:39 PM |
| 57. | Dr Gross and staff were terrific!! | Wed, 11/21/07 10:25 PM |

| 60. | great surgeon with great results! | Wed, 11/21/07 5:39 PM |
| 61. | I am still pre-op for resurfacing, but also have regular sharp pain in my right knee from the same hockey incident which precipated my hip issues. Both of my knees have already been replaced with titanium/plastic devices. I may need additional corrective work on my rt. knee when my hip has healed. At that point, I should be in great shape -- again! Thanks | Wed, 11/21/07 4:23 PM |
| 62. | Best thing I've done for myself. When my other hip goes, will get it resurfaced. | Wed, 11/21/07 3:28 PM |
| 63. | I researched hip arthritis 9 years ago when I realized that I had a problem. Hip resurfacing was very new, but I recognized that it was the best option for me. Last year I discovered Surface Hippy and it helped educate me further about the procedure AND about Dr. Bose. It was the best medical experience that I have ever had. | Wed, 11/21/07 3:03 PM |

Wayne Tava | Wed, 11/21/07 12:25 PM |
| 69. | Back pain for several months aftere surgery as my pelvis adjusted to the restored, original length of my operated leg | Wed, 11/21/07 11:25 AM |

| 76. | I've had some back problems. I believe they were caused by realigning to the new flat platform created when I got my new hip. They are resolving and I am standing straighter and walking without a limp, something I haven't done for years. | Wed, 11/21/07 1:16 AM |
| 77. | As I said, I fell down while cycling on the operated side at 7.5 months but no injury | Wed, 11/21/07 12:58 AM |

He was right, and I haven't had any strange sounds or feelings since then. I'm VERY pleased with the results of my hip resurfacing. | Tue, 11/20/07 9:22 PM |
| 83. | had the Shock Wave treatment that put off this upcoming BHR for almost two years. | Tue, 11/20/07 9:13 PM |
| 84. | My experience to date has been great. My only problem has been that I would love to run, jog, or even an eliptical machine, but I can't because of my unsurgical hip. My unsurgical hip becomes inflammed when doing those type of activities. | Tue, 11/20/07 9:08 PM |
| 85. | Prior to surgery I was on crutches for 6 months waiting for insurance approval. (I had 5 denials before they said "yes".) I had bilateral surgery, with the 2nd surgery, 3 days after the first. I was on a walker a month just because of doctors orders. After my one month exam I used a cane for a week, threw it away and never looked back. | Tue, 11/20/07 9:01 PM |
| 86. | Three doctors told my femur was in such a bad condition(AVN - satge 4) that Total Hip replacement is the one solutions. but when i met doctor Gross in columbia. He said 50 -50 chances for re-surfacing and THR. He considered BHR as good option as i am young(28) he didn't give the great success rate of this operation in my case. But primarily we can buy some time lets say 5 - 6 years from now before THR. Made Sense to me. | Tue, 11/20/07 7:59 PM |
| 87. | Had surgical dislocation for femoral acetabular impingement 9/2004. Too much damage so need either THR or hip resurfacing now. | 89. | My first several days after the surgery were the worst, slowly got better over time. After hip-hab the PT I saw was was struck by my progress as apposed the THR's he's seen. Also a PT who also plays rugby was impressed as well. My right hip is now holding me back and I now have surgery scheduled for my right hip at the end of January. | Tue, 11/20/07 7:09 PM |
| 90. | Post-op pain zero, no pain meds needed once epidural removed (actually had a heated debate with Dr about not wanting pain meds, none taken at home, no discomfort in hip now. | 92. | best thing i did in life | Tue, 11/20/07 6:22 PM |
| 93. | I had a total hip replacement on my other (left) hip in 1993 which had to be replaced in 2005. There was a lot of bone loss because of cysts in the pelvis behind the cup cause by the debris of the plastic liner. I was on crutches for almost a year because they had to rebuild the left pelvis with donated bone material. This may or may not relate to the need for a resurface of the right hip in 2007. | Tue, 11/20/07 6:06 PM |
| 94. | I have had a couple of trip over falls & had to x-ray the hip to check all is in place. All is well & I keep very active all of the time. Thank goodness for the BHR. | Tue, 11/20/07 6:04 PM |
| 95. | I would like to say that the people of SH need to be more open to people who use doctors they never heard of as well as allow people to speak about any pains they experience after surgery. I wish I had heard more of people's stories of pain before I went for surgery cause I expected to be virtually pain free the day after surgery based on the discussions on SH. This was not the case and is pretty common, I have found, with most people! | Tue, 11/20/07 5:38 PM |
| 96. | Dr Gross & staff were incredible! | Tue, 11/20/07 5:26 PM |
| 97. | The pain in my leg was misdiagnosed as a back problem and I had back surgery which did not alleviae my symptoms at all. Thankfully the back surgery was minimally invasive with minimal hardware and has not caused problelms. However, I feel that all back surgeons should recognize that loss of hip joint space can lead to an uneven pelvis and cause sciatic problems and therefore what appears to be a back problem can really be a hip problem. Hips should always be looked at before anyone has back surgery. When you get past 50 most people will have some spinal column anomalies that could appear to be the cause of sciatic pain. | Tue, 11/20/07 4:57 PM |
| 98. | It was so much fun, I think I'll have the other one done before I am in total misery like I was with the first one. | Tue, 11/20/07 4:50 PM |
| 99. | I ONLY WISH THAT I HAD MY SURGERY SOONER AS I WAS PUT OFF HAVING IT FOR ABOUT 1 YEAR BY THE NHS. WAS TOLD TO GO AND LOSE WEIGHT WHICH I DID AND NOW I AM GETTING MY LIFE BACK AFTER ALMOST 2 YEARS OF PROGRESSIVE PAIN. I FEEL I HAVE BEEN RELEASED FROM PRISON AS I WAS NOT FREE TO DO, BE OR THINK WITHOUT THE DISTRACTION OF PAIN. | Tue, 11/20/07 4:43 PM |
| 100. | Dr. Gross did my surgery. It was quite painless. I was about the 12th person in the world to receive the BIOMET cementless. It is fantastic!!!!!!!!! | Tue, 11/20/07 4:40 PM |
| 101. | Had resurfacing of both hips (12/00 & 1/01) by Dr. Thomas Parker Vail, Duke Hosptial, FDA Study of Wright Conserve Plus. Have been xrayed annually--no problems so far. | Tue, 11/20/07 4:29 PM |
| 102. | I've had both of my hips resurfaced and unfortunately one of the femur heads has collapsed under the ball so I need to have a revision surgery probably early next year. I'm holding off as long as possible to have the surgery but I'm having significant knee pain so I'm not going to wait too much longer. I'll probably have a large head ball in a THR. It's a bummer. My other resurfaced hip is fine. | Tue, 11/20/07 4:22 PM |
| 103. | Had both hips resurfaced by Dr. Thomas Parker Vail at Duke Hospital (FDA Study), & the surgeries were only 7 weeks apart. I'll take the survey twice, but, e.g., for the question when did you return to work, I didn't return until 5 weeks after the last surgery, so I'll put 5 weeks for both surveys. Other responses will be similarly affected. | Tue, 11/20/07 4:21 PM |
| 104. | Resurfacing allowed me to resume windsurfing, snowboarding and other active, non-impact activities, with minimal dislocation risk. What a blessing! | Tue, 11/20/07 4:18 PM |
| 105. | Diagnosis took app. 10 years and several doctors. Finally informed me via web and insisted on op. | Tue, 11/20/07 4:17 PM |
| 106. | no medication needed EVER, walked out of the hospital with only a cane, rode the exercise bike in 4 days, drove in 4 days, back to Taekwon-Do in 5 weeks. This surgery was an absolute non-event! | Tue, 11/20/07 4:11 PM |
| 107. | The indian doctor(Dr. Bala), has more experience than the Americans and he charges 1/6th the price. My advice to my fellow baby boomers is to dump your insurance and outsource your medical care to foreign countries. American medical care is over rated and over paid. | Tue, 11/20/07 4:07 PM |
| 108. | Whilst the hip is great, I still have muscle complications that are taking a while to resolve. Specifically, the obliques and QL were recruited to help me walk and these are still firing at times and cause varying degrees of discomfort. I'm helped by Pilates, swimming and chiropractic and soon will be taking Feldenkrais. | Tue, 11/20/07 4:07 PM |
| 109. | You should not ask for exact date. And why ask for time since surgery date if you ask for exact date. | Tue, 11/20/07 4:00 PM |
| 110. | Dr. Michael Mont, Sinai Hospital, Baltimore, MD -- bilateral hip resurfacings, Wright Comserve Plus | Tue, 11/20/07 3:59 PM |

| 115. | Dr. Thomas Gross performed surgery in Columbia, SC | Tue, 11/20/07 11:19 AM |
| 116. | My only dissatisfaction is that my range of motion has not returned as quickly as I thought it would. For example, I still cannot put on socks or shoes. Am still following doctor orders regarding specific exercises. | Tue, 11/20/07 11:00 AM |
| 117. | The time frame from when the dr received the file to the scheduled surgery date was very quick. As we have "unscribed" to the Surfacehippy website is there anyway you could e-mail the results of this survery to patbuch@telus.net. | Mon, 11/19/07 11:26 PM |
| 118. | This, surgery #2, was not as perfect as #1 - some groin muscle issues, even now. Longer recovery, but still better than the alternative. :) | Mon, 11/19/07 9:54 PM |
| 119. | Internet research brought me to surfacehippy, where I made one of the best decisions of my life. I'm very grateful. It was easy! | Mon, 11/19/07 9:46 PM |
| 120. | Dr. Edwin Su & HSS were wonderful. | Mon, 11/19/07 9:19 PM |
| 121. | Prior to the surgery my "bad" leg was shorter. After surger that leg is longer. If it were not for the length difference and pain/discomfort in the operated side groin...I'd be 110% | Mon, 11/19/07 8:14 PM |
| 122. | DVT leading to pulmonary embolisms which just recurred at 12 months. Original cause was inadequate blood thinning. | Mon, 11/19/07 11:28 AM |
| 123. | Patience and persistence in post op recovery | Mon, 11/19/07 6:10 AM |
| 124. | My major complication was before the surgery. It was due to a road trauma where my hip had multiple dislocations and fractures. Suffered for nearly 15+ years from the age of 19 with increasing degrees of pain and discomfort. Was resigning myself to a work-from-home-desk-job. The surgery has really done wonders to my confidence and outlook to life. | Mon, 11/19/07 1:09 AM |
| 125. | I have had problems with the slow healing of the abductor muscle. It still feels weak when I walk for any distance, and I still limp after I sit in most styles of seating. This is especially so when I sit either on a very low seat, or on a hard surface. I am still fairly pleased with the whole proceedure, and still have slight hopes that there is room for improvement and strengthening over time. | Sun, 11/18/07 10:58 PM |
| 126. | Some questions about improvement I'm not in a position to answer properly yet as I'm only in my 4th post op week. Thanks. | Sun, 11/18/07 9:06 PM |
| 127. | Have had considerable post-op pain and so far have bursitis, and a torn muscle and not sure what else | Sun, 11/18/07 8:34 PM |
| 128. | Recovery is a long process. If you want a normal range of motion you have to work hard every day for at least one year. The results are worth it!! | Sun, 11/18/07 7:46 PM |
| 129. | My biggest frustration is still having no great lateral movement and quite a bit of twinges in the groin area... still have lots of pulling and pain up through the lower buttocks. No problems show up with x-rays. I may need some very extensive PT> | Sun, 11/18/07 7:46 PM |
| 130. | I am happy for internet in which someone can research and find something suitable so correct decision can be made | Sun, 11/18/07 12:28 PM |
| 131. | very tight hip flexor several months after surgery-went to physical therapy which helped; also have had lower back spasms several times requiring muscle relaxants and physical therapy; hip is good, but not as good as other one; soreness and some pain in hip and buttock area after strenuos tennis; take one or two Aleve(naproxin) every day- wish I could stop | Sun, 11/18/07 10:01 AM |
| 132. | It has been a huge positive change for me | Sun, 11/18/07 8:30 AM |
| 133. | 2nd wk post-op had major swelling and pain in lower leg of operated side. After about 5 days, pain and swelling receded. Otherwise, great results. | Sun, 11/18/07 6:39 AM |
| 134. | I am very active now, but have got to know when to stop work and relax also. Life is great again. | Sat, 11/17/07 11:08 PM |

| 137. | For question 8 I would say I slept very badly for almost 2 weeks. I would hope to do another survey at 6 months since I am 4 weeks now. | Sat, 11/17/07 8:34 PM |
| 138. | I still feel pain when I Try ding a straddle stretch in front of my hips. Also I had bilateral hips done at the same time. | Sat, 11/17/07 7:42 PM |
| 139. | Excellent experience with Dr. Mont, my local orthopods had no knowledge of procedure but did not discourage me. One PA reviewed the resurfacing procedure and spoke with birmingham rep and reported that it would be a good procedure for me. From Dover, DE | Sat, 11/17/07 12:52 PM |
| 140. | Dr. DeSmet is the BEST!! | Fri, 11/16/07 1:10 AM |
| 141. | Having my second hip done by same surgeon (Amstutz) in a month | Thu, 11/15/07 2:29 PM |
| 142. | After 2 1/2 years, the resurfaced hip seems to be doing well, but there is still discomfort from it while doing heavy work or lying on it. | Thu, 11/15/07 11:21 AM |
| 143. | If you fly to your surgeon, try and take as much time at that location before flying home. Even traveling coast-to-coast in first class was not that much fun, even after waiting until the morning of the 4th day after surgery. But I did it and was happy to be home. | Wed, 11/14/07 6:58 PM |
| 144. | Wish I had found out about resurfacing sooner and have had it done sooner, but am grateful that it did happen and that I could be part of the eventual FDA approval processes. | Wed, 11/14/07 4:41 PM |
| 145. | I had my double hip surgery with Derek McMinn. It doesn't get any better than that. | Tue, 11/13/07 5:09 PM |
| 146. | I am glad I got the full hip replacement. At my age, I think that was the best plan, as it is supposed to last 30 years (cadmium alloy, with metal-clad poly socket). It is not an operation that one wants to repeat. Additionally, each operation stretches the tendons, and it is that tendon stretching that causes the most problems, generally, in recovery. I DID CATCH A STAPH INFECTION IN A SAUNA OR STEAM ROOM AT A HEALTH CLUB WELL AFTERWARD. PATIENTS WHO ARE ADVISED TO SWIM IN HEALTH CLUBS SHOULD BE FULLY WARNED ABOUT STAPH, INCLUDING HOW TO RECOGNIZE IT AND KILL IT WITH CHLORINE BEFORE IT DEVELOPS FURTHER. THIS INFORMATION IS NOT BEING SUFFICIENTLY PROVIDED TO JOINT REPLACEMENT PATIENTS. If I had been handed a handout on staph by my surgeon saying how to recognize it and what to do to prevent its spread, I would not have ended up with an incurable infection. I was set up for the infection by having taken a prophylactic antibiotic dose before a dental procedure a few days before. Patients need to be warned to stay out of health clubs for several week after having been on antibiotics. | Mon, 11/12/07 12:29 AM |
| 147. | The hip is a non-factor in my life now, except at airports. | Sun, 11/11/07 1:11 PM |
| 148. | My only problem (short lived) was swelling of the operated leg for a week or so after the operation, made sleeping difficult. That aside, I cannot believe how lucky I was having this operation. My life has been transformed by it, and life without pain is great. Many thanks to my surgeon. | Sat, 11/10/07 5:47 AM |
| 149. | Physical therapy 3x per week made me incredibly sore most of the time. My doctor advised me to swim and walk and stop PT and now I have virtually no problems. I recently tried jogging on treadmill a couple of times which also made me very sore. Dr. Edwin Su was my physician. | Sat, 11/10/07 2:12 AM |
| 150. | The reasons that my op is unsatisfactory are not clear and have not been diagnosed. The hip 'clunks' and judders and my forward elevation is limited and painful. Have to struggle to do socks, toenails etc! Seems to be a 'time delay' in messages getting to the operated leg. | Fri, 11/9/07 3:29 PM |
| 151. | The BHR has given me my life back. I have a 9 yr. old daughter that loves sports. I can now play soccer, ice skate, ski and cycle with her instead of watching her from the sidelines. In some cases, hip resurfacing is a far better option vs. hip replacement yet there are still insurance co. that will not cover the surgery. We need to all continue to educate these ins. co.'s with surveys like these. I have appeared in 2 TV spots and several stories as I was the 1st. BHR paitent in the Pittsburgh region to have the surgery. | Fri, 11/9/07 9:08 AM |
| 152. | FYI: The arthritis I had which caused the deterioration in the hip joints was Ankyliosing Spondilitis, and I have met other people, more commonly men, who have had to have hip surgery becasue of the same disease. | Thu, 11/8/07 9:07 PM |
| 153. | I had my right hip done on 10/18/2006 and the left done on 10/27/2006. Given the choice, I would have them done at the same time. Other than that I LOVE my new hardware! | Thu, 11/8/07 8:02 PM |
| 154. | It definitely helped to go into surgery in good physical condition. Likewise, getting back to being active quickly and staying active seems to have helped my recovery. Obviously not everyone is going to be quite as active as I've been, but what's important is just getting up and moving. Long walks are great...using those hip muscles is imperative. | Thu, 11/8/07 6:35 PM |
| 155. | With regard to walking a mile etc. I've never taken the time to do it. Although I had both hips resurfaced, all the above answers are appropirate. During physical therapy I take my pain medication. In the beginning, I started out at 30 mg of Oxycodone and increased up to 60 mg pre PT. Am now decreasing the medication and currently am at 40 mg. Will go down to 30 mg pre PT next week. Physical therapy results over a 6-7 week period are semi-remarkable. I will be posting on Surface Hippy re my experiences, which have been very, very positive. Thanks for taking the time to do this survey. Hope some good comes of it. | Thu, 11/8/07 4:56 PM |
| 156. | had a major alllergic reaction to the wound dressing. experiencing a lot of clicking continually, but absolutely no pain. clicking started at 4 months, and is still present. i assume that I dont have a size issue with the BHR recall problems ( Hope !!) | Thu, 11/8/07 2:16 PM |
| 157. | I used to think Eric Clapton was God, now I know I was wrong, Doctor Bose is God :) | Thu, 11/8/07 2:01 PM |
| 158. | I was on pain meds for 3 years. Now on nothing. My mood is so much better I am always on the go. Prior to surgery for about a year it was a more sedentary lifestyle. | Thu, 11/8/07 12:39 PM |
| 159. | Have recomended it to 4 others since. In a twon of 5000. All four have gone to South Carolina and are pleased witht the experience so far. Latest one is scheduled for December 9, 2008 | Thu, 11/8/07 10:45 AM |
| 160. | One of the most rewarding experiences of my life. I was down and out and felt that my active life was over at age 40. I found Surfacehippy while searching for an alternative to a total hip replacement and because my insurance would not cover resurfacing went to Belgium to Dr. DeSmet for my BHR. Best decision I ever made. | Thu, 11/8/07 10:03 AM |
| 161. | My operated leg is 1" longer than my non op leg and I cannot walk without a stick or a built up shoe. I have tried driving but this hurts too much in my operated hip. | Wed, 11/7/07 2:53 PM |
| 162. | The head of the greater trochanter was removed during the operation and then replaced and screwed in place. This healed well but at 13 weeks I was told that the metal implant in the socket had failed to bond onto the bone, which is apparently very rare. I have another 4 weeks left before I have to have another x-ray to see if the metal has been accepted, otherwise the surgeon intends to operate again to replace the cup with a different shaped one, hoping it will bond with healthier bone. | Wed, 11/7/07 9:36 AM |
| 163. | Highly Recommend this operation , returned my life back to me ....Just don't overdo it and trash the gift you've been given back...key is moderation and variety. | Wed, 11/7/07 12:17 AM |
| 164. | At this point am unclear about insurance details and many post-surgical issues....I had a bilateral resurfacing, so some of the questions really didn't apply...I had excellent range of motion in one of the legs and very limited in the other for the past 6 months...I had had a bilateral hip injection in March '07 (cortisone, orthovisc), had a bad reaction to the shot and my left hip structure collapsed within the next two months...before the shot I had had good range of motion in both hips...the R one was OK after the shot, but I had it resurfaced, because it did have cartilege wear and was going to need the surgery in the near future. | Tue, 11/6/07 6:07 AM |
| 165. | had THR on r.hip and now BHR on l.hip any feedback?going to India Dec. and paying on C.C. | Mon, 11/5/07 12:32 PM |
| 166. | I had femur neck fracture and had revision to total hip replacement. The hip cup stayed and the femur spike has big ball to match. No problems since. Recovery was faster than from resurfacing. | Sun, 11/4/07 12:58 PM |
| 167. | Personally, I found reading "the boards" to be more counter-productive that helpful and I gave them up post-op. I am young, strong, and had a great surgeon..."gaging" my hip recovery by all these unknown persons is just ridiculous...it comes when it comes. Just my 2 cents. | Sun, 11/4/07 8:22 AM |
| 168. | It has been 4 monts post op and I still do not have the range of motion I would like. Maybe it takes more time. I still do my leg strenthening excercises every other day, I got rid of my limp but I still feel as though I am not quite there yet. | Sat, 11/3/07 3:46 PM |
| 169. | Having my hip resurfaced was the best thing I have done - to not be able to walk 5 minutes pre-op was awful and now you can't stop me walking (but I need to now run (but don't) to keep up with the kids on their bikes). Hope that helps Regards Vicki from Christchurch | Sat, 11/3/07 7:05 AM |
| 170. | To encourge blood flow to the area, the surgeon cut off a small portion of my greater trochanter, flipped it around by 180 degrees and screwed it back on. I believe the idea was that this artificially created trauma would bring blood flowing to that area and across the femur neck where I had previously incurred a break. The hope was that it would prevent any further necrosis in the head. I was told it was a proven technique with only a .5% failure rate. In my case, the slice of bone failed to fuse resulting in a space that filled with fibrous tissue. Seven months later, I had another operation to clean out the area and reattach the bone using 3 screws instaed of the initial 2. This impacted on the time frame of my recovery from the basic resurfacing procedure | Fri, 11/2/07 7:59 AM |
| 171. | I had both hips done as different times. My left is working just great. No pain, great motion. My right was the worst of the two and even though it is much, much better than before, there is still some slight pains at time and not as much range of motion. However it is way better than before so it was still the right decision for me! Resurfacing works. | Thu, 11/1/07 1:27 PM |
| 172. | I have had problems since surgery with my psoas muscle and lack of range of movement. This caused allot of back pain and posture problems. I have had a second opp a year later to release the psoas tendon and remove the psoas bursar due to busitus and psoas impingmnet. This has helped a little bit but not much. I still think that there is a underlying reason why my hip is stiff and painfull. I have tried nearly every type of pysio. I am still glad I had the opp as I am in less pain now that pre opp. | Wed, 10/31/07 4:23 PM |
| 173. | Very happy Hippy!!! | Wed, 10/31/07 3:44 PM |
| 174. | I have osteopenia (worse in left hip than right) which led surgeon (DR. Thomas Gross) to install extra pin for femoal neck support (left), and to impose 6 weeks of 10% weight bearing. | Wed, 10/31/07 3:38 PM |
| 175. | I have recommended this surgery to friends who also have been very happy with their surgery. | Tue, 10/30/07 9:01 PM |
| 176. | Immediately after the operation I ended up with drop foot. The top of my foot and outer part of my lower leg was/is numb. I was unable to lift my foot. 9 months out, I am able to lift my foot, although there is still considerable weekness. The numbness is still there. I am TRULY thankful that the pain is not an everyday problem anymore. | Tue, 10/30/07 7:09 PM |
| 177. | I have absolutely no regrets. While I'm fully healed, I still feel like my recovery is continuing. After 10 years of favoring my bad hip the muscles are still getting stronger in an effort to match the other side. But I'm as strong or stronger and happier than I've ever been in my life. | Tue, 10/30/07 4:33 PM |
| 178. | Foot drop from nerve damage, took about a year to completly go away | Tue, 10/30/07 3:13 PM |
| 179. | I am so glad that I decided to get the surgery done before I was completely disabled! | Tue, 10/30/07 2:16 PM |
| 180. | It seems that my operated hip/leg is longer than before. I have to wear a lift in my shoe now. | Tue, 10/30/07 11:00 AM |
| 181. | **Please note I was scheduled for a re-surfacing but surgeon saw deterioration as to extreme, femur head was all gelatin, and performed THR. Although I was very disappointed, I was determined to keep pace with resurfacers and so far results have been great. Those who face this possibility due to cysts or other issues should see re-surfacing as optimal but should not fear a THR as the end of the world--I am back to all activities without restriction & with no side effects to my repaired hip. | Tue, 10/30/07 6:42 AM |
| 182. | Fantastic surgery - I've had 2 of them. Feel like a new woman!! | Mon, 10/29/07 5:44 PM |
| 183. | Great experience | Mon, 10/29/07 5:38 PM |
| 184. | The only complication is that about 3 weeks post op, my other hip started to hurt. The other hip is supposedly worse than the operated hip - but was not symptomatic until the surgery of the left hip. Due to a poor bone quality, the dr said I would not be a candidate for resurfacing on the other hip. | Mon, 10/29/07 3:37 PM |
| 185. | the best thing I have ever done, completely transformed my life, wish I had done it many years before | Mon, 10/29/07 1:56 PM |
| 186. | I would recommend that anyone who enjoys any type of physical activity they wish to resume should investigate hip resurfacing. I had to see 4 ortho guys before I even got a recommendation; thney all wanted a total hip replacement. Only after I said I was going to Belgium did I receive suggestions. Lesson is do NOT take 'no' for the first 3 answers :) | Mon, 10/29/07 10:08 AM |
| 187. | I did not heal as fast as the doc said as far as being pain free etc.At 13 months post op I am now stsrting to feel like my old self. They said it would take one year so they weren't that far off. | Mon, 10/29/07 2:19 AM |
| 188. | Doctors orders required a can for 4 weeks. Still workingto improve flexability due to favoring the leg for 15 years. | Mon, 10/29/07 12:08 AM |
| 189. | Best thing I ever did was ignore my US doctors and go to India for the BHR. | Sun, 10/28/07 11:56 PM |
| 190. | Thanks to all the people who make resurfacing a success | Sun, 10/28/07 11:52 PM |
| 191. | I developed a hematoma in my leg which was unbelievably painful. it had to be "washed out" so I was back on the surgeon's table again in a week | Sun, 10/28/07 10:45 PM |
| 192. | I had bone grapht/core dicomp 12 years ago from AVN, this BHR was a life saver. Hubley us wonderful in Mobile, AL!!! | Sun, 10/28/07 9:32 PM |
| 193. | Having my left hip resurfaced was the best decision I ever made. Allowed me to start living my life again. | Sun, 10/28/07 6:14 PM |
| 194. | Dont leave it too late. It was well worth it. I frequently forget that i ever had the pain now - it feels like that was somebody elses life. | Sun, 10/28/07 5:43 PM |
| 195. | My experience was great, and recommended to everyone I meet who is a potential hip replacement candidate. Most don't listen and wind up with THR, because of insurance or lack of education. | Sun, 10/28/07 4:30 PM |
| 196. | Have to say that it is like new no issues at all very happy its like it never happened have regained my flexibility and probably sitting at 85-90% of the strength I had in tha leg and still improving | Sun, 10/28/07 4:24 PM |
| 197. | major infection in this second hip (after having infection in first hip resurf.) 3 weeks of strong antibiotics didn't solve the problem. Had to be readmitted, infection cleared out and remnants of internal stiches cut away before being sutures with 'catgut' type stiches externally. second procedure a complete success. OPS considers that I may well have developed an allergy to internal stitching. | Sun, 10/28/07 3:20 PM |
| 198. | abscess formed on scar, one month after operation. 6 weeks of strong antibiotics finally cleared the infection. Surgeon thought it was due to internal stitch coming through surface of skin and getting infected. | Sun, 10/28/07 3:08 PM |
| 199. | My surgery was bi-lateral, done the same day at Orthopedic Hospital in Los Angeles with Dr. Harlan Amstutz. I have had follow up visits and x-rays (the last was one month ago) and according to Amstutz all looks perfect. | Sun, 10/28/07 2:59 PM |
| 200. | After nearly 4 years post op I am still using 2 crutches to walk outside. I had a 2nd opinion and was advised to have more surgery to my hip,(repairs to the tensor fascia lata muscle, removal of bursa, removal of undissolved stitches and osteophytes). After having the bursa removed it has regrown and is still permantly inflamed. I have had several cortisone injections into the inflamed bursa which help for a short while sometimes. I never had this problem before the op. My os is reluctant to remove the bursa again as it could still grow back inflamed again. | Sun, 10/28/07 10:46 AM |
| 201. | Surgery returned my active life to me. | Sun, 10/28/07 9:59 AM |
| 202. | HSS in New York. My first hospital experience. Could not have been better. Facility, staff were tops. | Sun, 10/28/07 8:25 AM |
| 203. | Surface Replacement gave me my life back. I am not at all limited in what I want to do by having a hip replacement. | Sun, 10/28/07 7:39 AM |
| 204. | Long waiting times in US for surgery; over 3 months for me. Occasionally have the "clunk" feeling and some mild bursitus persists. Probably due to the amount of time I spend at the computer and lack of exercise. Treat with ice pack and antiinflammatories--otherwise, great! It does set off metal detectors in some airports, however. | Sun, 10/28/07 6:21 AM |
| 205. | Schmalzried performed surgury. I was quite fit prior to surgery and was prescibed zero weigth bearing for 6 weeks post opp. The level of atrophy was surprising and I suggest people considering surgery to weight train to extent possible to strengthen muscles as much as possible. | Sat, 10/27/07 9:03 PM |
| 206. | I felt great for about 8 months post-op, then began having pain again. X-rays were clear, but the pain progressed until 1½ years post-op I needed to use a cane, then crutches to get around. I was diagnosed with avascular necrosis of the femoral head, and subsequently had a MOM total hip replacement. Recovery from the 2nd procedure was longer than from the 1st suregery (I was also in much worse shape) but today, almost 10 months post-op, I am feeling better than I have since I started having hip problems 7 years ago. I will eventually require surgery on my other hip and I am not sure if I will opt for resurfacing when the time comes. AVN is a very rare complication, but in my case, having been through 2 surgeries in as many years, I would not want to go through that again. | Sat, 10/27/07 8:05 PM |
| 207. | I was a bilateral so 1 or 2 of the questions are not applicable. | Sat, 10/27/07 8:00 PM |
| 208. | I LOVED Dr. Amstutz--not a warm |
