Comparison of a BHR, a THR and a THR Revision stem

Advantage of starting with a BHR, makes the first revision easier than starting with a THR then going to another THR revision.

Revision Hip Surgery
This surgery replaces worn THR - total hip parts and damaged bone.  New, specially made metal, plastic or ceramic components are used to restore normal hip joint stability.

Step 1

The old plastic liner and metal socket components are removed.

Step 2

Morselized bone (bone in particle form) is used to strengthen the socket and fill bone cavities. Allograft (segments of bone) also may be used for support. It also may be necessary to use a wire mesh to hold the socket's shape.

Step 3

The new metal socket is pressed into place.

Step 4

A new plastic, metal or ceramic shell liner is pressed into place.

Step 5

To remove the old femoral component, the bone around it may be cut into sections (called an osteotomy).

Step 6

After the bone segments are cleaned of old cement. The new metal femoral component is pressed or cemented into place.

Step 7

Wire is used to close the bone segments tightly around the component. The wires may also hold struts of bone graft in place to strengthen the femur.

Step 8

A new metal or ceramic ball is placed on the femoral component.
